WHAT TO EXPECT WITH YOUR APPOINTMENT
Telemedicine (audio or video appointments) is a great tool to use in veterinary medicine. It is so helpful for people to have an option when it’s difficult to get your pet to a veterinary hospital, either due to your own health/mobility concerns or your pet's health/mobility concerns. Telemedicine is accessible to communities that lack veterinary services, and it can be very helpful for aggressive or anxious pets to receive care without the stress of leaving your home. There are 15-minute appointments for routine consultations in healthy pets without medical concerns to receive prescriptions for flea/tick control and dewormers. There are 30-minute appointments for pets that have health concerns, palliative care or require prescriptions for ongoing medical care.
Telemedicine has limitations and not every condition can be diagnosed and treated appropriately, however it can be used to provide:

Prescriptions for flea and tick medication (Bravecto, Nexguard, Simparica, Revolution)

Prescriptions for deworming medications (Interceptor, Interceptor plus, Milbemax)

Evaluation and prescriptions for stable and chronic (already diagnosed) medical diseases including chronic kidney disease, liver disease, endocrine disorders, skin disease

Evaluation and prescriptions for ongoing palliative care

Prescribing topical medications

Prescribing medications for pets travelling to BC from outside the province that require a prescription of a chronic medication that their own veterinarian cannot prescribe because they aren’t licenced in BC (i.e. You are travelling to BC and forgot/ran out/lost your pet’s medication and need it refilled while in BC.)
With the use of online and local pharmacies that are licenced to dispense veterinary drugs in Canada since 2024, I can prescribe appropriate medications for your pet, provided I have performed a telemedicine (or in person) examination and confirm the medication is appropriate. Sometimes just a short course of a medication will be prescribed if diagnostic tests should be performed with your regular veterinarian.

Please note: I only send prescriptions to licenced pharmacies. There are no substitutions or modifications allowed for the veterinary medication prescribed. I do not prescribe Solensia, Portela, Librela, Lenivia, or Cytopoint via telemedicine due to the human health risk associated with potential anaphylaxis with accidental self-stick injury. I do not prescribe controlled drugs or narcotics of any kind via telemedicine.

In-home: Routine, Medical and Palliative Care
WHAT TO EXPECT WITH YOUR APPOINTMENT
These are 30-minute appointments performed in-person at your home. If you require extra time, we can extend the visit in 15-minute intervals when appropriate and agreed upon. If you have a complicated case or many concerns, please ask for extra time to be added to your appointment when you book it. You can also email me ahead of your appointment so I can add more time to be sure all your concerns are addressed and adequate time is allotted. If there is inadequate time booked, a follow up appointment will be required to make sure I honor my next booked appointment without delay.
For in-person examinations, I can perform medical procedures including diagnostic laboratory tests (bloodwork and urinalysis, urine cultures), blood pressure evaluations, skin/ear examinations, skin cytology, ear cytology, fine needle aspirations and more. We offer management of medical conditions (such as chronic kidney disease, liver disease, heart disease), endocrine disorders (such as diabetes, hypothyroidism, Cushing’s syndrome, Addison’s disease, hyperthyroidism), cancer, arthritis, chronic pain, cognitive issues, urinary incontinence. We can discuss your pet’s conditions and determine if there are ways to help make them more comfortable – this may be medication (antinauseants, antianxiety medication, hormone therapy, pain control medications, antibiotics when indicated), subcutaneous fluid therapy, nutritional support, environmental modifications including non-slip mats, ramps, raised food bowls, harnesses, etc. I will ask for their previous medical record, so I can see what medications and diagnostic tests your pet has already had/is currently taking.
We can come up with a plan together that works for you, your pet and your home. If you’re struggling with “when is the right time” we can talk about that openly, without judgment and discuss options that work best for you and your pet.
My goal is to help both you and your pet in the last few years, months, days or moments of their life in a safe space where you can feel free to be honest without judgement.

Management of Chronic Kidney Disease in dogs and cats including demonstrations of how to administer subcutaneous fluids to your dog and cat

In-home blood pressure evaluation with a PetMap – without the stress of a trip to the vet hospital the blood pressure reading is more likely to be accurate at home

Management of Diabetes in Dogs and Cats including application of Freestyle Libre and teaching you how to take a blood glucose measurement at home

Cancer palliative care including pain control, management of secondary infections, appetite stimulants, antinauseants

Management of urinary incontinence including urinalysis to rule out infection, medications, helping find solutions such as Cosy Pads

Tools to assist with fecal incontinence – unfortunately there is no medication available to help with this type of incontinence but there are tips and tricks to make it less stressful

Management of chronic pain and mobility issues including environmental suggestions to help make your home more accessible to your pet, medications such as Onsior or Metacam, amantadine, gabapentin.

Injections of Solensia or Portela (in cats) or Librela or Lenivia (in dogs) for arthritis pain

Management of chronic skin disease and ear infections

Cytopoint injections to help in chronic environmental allergies (atopy) in dogs

Assist in navigating cognitive dysfunction and other age-related changes

Assist in making your home safer for a newly blind pet

In-home Euthanasia
WHAT TO EXPECT WITH YOUR APPOINTMENT
We will discuss your pet’s condition and your wishes prior to your appointment with a phone call (or email) to make sure that your needs are met and that you understand the procedure. Plans can be made for the remains of your pet, and any special requests can be made – we try our best to accommodate personalized requests. We will discuss who will be present for the procedure (family members, friends, other pets, children) and any concerns that you may have. These appointments typically take an hour but there is no additional fee for extended time. Sometimes pets take longer to sedate and relax and sometimes you need extra time to say goodbye – there is no rush. If you believe extra time will be needed, please let me know in our discussions ahead of the appointment so that I can book additional time appropriately.
Consent forms will be signed online prior to your visit and payment for end-of-life care will be made, so that we can focus on taking care of you and your pet during my visit. If you’re not familiar or able to fill out forms online, then we can fill them out together in person at our scheduled appointment. Oral sedation and special instructions will be arranged for anxious or aggressive pets prior to my arriving.
I will arrive at your home as close to the scheduled appointment time as possible and talk with you about anything else on your mind. You will be free to love your pet and comfort them throughout the entire process. I will then give a first medication that will relax and calm your pet and provide pain control. It is given just under the skin, and we will try and distract them by using food, love, and a gentle technique to make it as stress free as possible. I will offer you privacy but remain nearby while the sedation/pain control takes effect and explain anything you’re unsure of. When they and you are ready, I will give the second medication - a concentrated anaesthetic which is not painful to receive. The medication works very quickly to help
them fall into a deep, peaceful sleep—first relaxingtheir mind, then gently slowing their breathing and heart until they pass away
comfortably, without any pain. If any other body responses happen, I will explain them at the time. You will be offered more privacy to say goodbye and then we can make a clay paw print, and/or an ink impression of
their nose and/or paw. There is no additional fee for ink impressions or paw prints done with you at home.
Once you’ve said your final goodbye, I will take your pet with me for cremation. If your pet weighs more than 25lbs I may need your help in moving them to my vehicle – please let me know if you’re not able to and I will bring someone with me. I do have Steph with me most of the time, but sometimes we will still require assistance.
Ashes will be returned to you in 1-2 weeks if private cremation is selected. Ashes are spread at the crematorium if you choose to not have ashes returned. You can also choose to take your pet to the crematorium yourself if that is your preference, but this also needs to be arranged in advance with the crematorium.
